ESO Department to Department Visit Programme
Report by Alessio Pieroni, MD

I had the pleasure to spend a week visiting the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital stroke service in Glasgow, from the 22th to 26th of  May 2017.

During the week, I joined the clinical and research activities of the stroke team headed by Prof. Keith Muir, attending the ward rounds, the outpatient clinics and radiology/neuroradiology review meetings. As visiting doctor I observed the management of suspected acute stroke patients in the emergency department, the discussion about possible diagnostic clinical and radiological pathways and the subsequent treatment options. This was a valuable opportunity to see the very well structured organization of health services in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, regarding acute stroke patient care from the stroke alert to the post-acute inward management.

Moreover, I enjoyed to observe the numerous ongoing clinical trials among acute stroke diagnosis and treatment as well as secondary prevention studies. The remarkable organization of research activities was a valuable experience that gave me ideas and hints to implement my efforts in the field of stroke research and, hopefully, a precious opportunity for possible future collaborations.

I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Keith Muir for his hospitality and kindness and to the European Stroke Organization for giving me the support of the Department to Department Visit Programme, a unique learning experience and an opportunity to exchange different points of view with foreign colleagues.
