D2D Visit Report – Dr Mariam Kekenadze

14/04/2023/in ESO, Stroke Research /by Carine Legio

Awardee: Dr. Mariam Kekenadze

Host Institution: Perugia University Hospital, Italy, Prof Valeria Caso

I visited Perugia University Hospital stroke unit under the supervision of Prof. Valeria Caso in December 2022. I had an idea before visiting the stroke unit how significant this visit might be for me and it came true.

During the time spent at Perugia hospital, I was introduced to fellow researchers and clinicians. Everyone was extremely welcoming and helpful in different ways. It is safe to say, this atmosphere and friendly attitude made it easier to focus on gaining new knowledge and skills. At 9 am we all started ward rounds at the beginning discussing every patient in the doctor’s room accompanied with an unforgettable taste of Italian espresso and later on paying visits to all patients.

During the discussion, we evaluated the differences between Italian stroke care and Georgian stroke care, the life of neurologists in both countries, and what there is to look forward to in the future, my every question was answered with extreme attention and kindness.

The National Museum of Perugia, among other sights, made me fall in love with the city of Perugia, which is one of the most magnificent parts of Italy.

In closing, I would like to thank Prof.Valeria Caso and her team for my memorable visit. Their hospitality and kindness will always be on my mind and we will continue to work together in the future.
