26th ESO Stroke Summer School

4-8 September 2023  |  L’Aquila, Italy

WELCOME

The ESO Stroke Summer School is a flagship event for ESO and a prestigious educational meeting for stroke trainees throughout Europe. For ESO, it has been very rewarding to see that many of the previous Stroke Summer School participants have become leading stroke physicians and researchers.

The 26th ESO Stroke Summer School will take place in L’Aquila, Italy from 4-8 September 2023. For one week stroke specialists from all over Europe will provide their expert knowledge to young physicians with a major interest in cerebrovascular diseases.

L’Aquila will welcome you with its historical architecture, state-of-the-art technological facilities, and a beautiful landscape. Be ready for five days you will keep life-long in your memory. We look forward to seeing you in L’Aquila!

VENUE and LOCATION

L’Aquila can be reached by flight, rail, or road.

By airplane + bus

The closest airports are located in Rome (Fiumicino Airport – Ciampino Airport) and in Pescara (Aeroporto d’Abruzzo). An express coach service directly connects both Fiumicino and Ciampino Airports to L’Aquila, operated by Gaspari bus company. The trip takes about 2 hours from Fiumicino and 1h45min from Ciampino. You can find timetable and fares info on www.gasparionline.it/en. Tickets may be bought online or directly on the bus.

When in L’Aquila, Gaspari buses stop at Hotel Amiternum, about 3 km from the venue. From there you can take any bus going towards the city centre. Also taxi cabs are normally available at Hotel Amiternum. You can also call the company Radio-Taxi (+39 0862 25165, web: www.radiotaxilaquila.it) to organise a trip, which would cost around €6-10 depending on traffic or day/night fare.

From Rome Fiumicino airport you can also take a train to the train station Roma Tirburtina (about 35 minutes) and take a bus to L’Aquila (about 1h30min): see train + bus.

By train + bus

While L’Aquila rail station is not well connected, frequent bus connections are available from the Tiburtina train station in Rome. This station is served with frequent high-speed service by both main Italian rail companies (Trenitalia and Italo). The metro line B connects train stations Termini and Tiburtina.

Buses from Rome Tiburtina are proposed (among others) by TUA, Flixbus and Gaspari, and the trip takes about 1h30min. The bus parking lot is in front of the station’s main entrance. Buses offered by TUA are the most convenient since they arrive at Collemagio bus terminal, while Gaspari and Flibux buses arrive at theHotel Amiternum.

For more information about how to reach the venue from the bus stops in L’Aquila, please see “by airplane + bus”.

By car

Among other solutions, drivers can take the A24 highway and take the exit “L’Aquila Ovest” or “L’Aquila Est”. Then, follow the road signs to the city centre.

By train

This is may be the least convenient solution if you are in a hurry, but the small trains that climb the mountains up to L’Aquila from Terni or Sulmona travel through beautiful Italian landscapes. Visit the Trenitalia site for timetables. From the L’Aquila train station, take a bus or a taxi to the city centre.
