The Angels Steering Committee

The ESO Angels Steering Committee has been mandated by the ESO Executive Committee to establish the ESO Angels Awards project. The ESO Angels Steering Committee is responsible for the overview of the process and the evaluation of achievements according to specific criteria.

The results of the achievements of the hospital in each of the award criteria will be sent quarterly to the ESO Head Office and for verification of the national coordinators and final approval to the ESO Angels Award Committee.

The aim of the ESO Angels Awards is to increase the numbers of patients treated in stroke ready hospitals and to optimise the quality of treatment in all existing stroke centres.

Valeria Caso is a stroke neurologist at the University of Perugia Stroke Unit. She earned her PhD from the University of Perugia in stroke medicine in 2003 and has been recently certified in the role of associate professor in Neurology.

Valeria Caso has authored and co-authored more than 200 published papers and book-chapters.

She is a past member of the JNNP Editorial Board. She has served as peer reviewer to over 30 international journals including JNNP, CVD, Stroke, Neurology and Lancet Neurology for more than a total of 200 papers. She has been involved in 20 multicenter trials serving in various positions including steering committees. She supervised several masters, residents and MD-theses. She is currently actively involved in international research projects on cervical artery dissections, heart and brain, intracerebral haemorrhage, and acute stroke treatment. She has made primary interest the treatment and prevention of stroke in women and she is about to present a multicenter European project on primary prevention in women with the aim of uncovering the underlying thought to be associated with fostering stroke in women of all ages.

Dr. Niaz Ahmed

Dr. Niaz Ahmed is an associate Professor of Neurology, Karolinska Institutet and Deputy Chief Consultant at the department of Neurology, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

He is a co-founder, Vice Chairman, member of the Scientific Committee and Board Member for the SITS International (https://sitsinternational.org). He is a co-chair of ESO- Karolinska Stroke Update Conference’ (https://eso-stroke.org). He was the coordinating researcher for SITS-MOST and since 2007 work as a Senior Researcher at Karolinska Stroke Research Unit and International Coordination Centre for SITS. He is a Vice director of the project ‘Fighting Stroke’ ). He is a member of ESO and ESO Conference Committee 2018. He is coordinating several ongoing and upcoming projects and coordinating investigator of Phase-III, multicentre, efficacy randomised controlled trial (I-Stroke II). He is author of more than 60 original articles, several book chapters and accepted abstracts for presentation at international conferences. Have co-supervised 3 doctoral students who defended thesis and currently supervising 4 doctoral students.

Prof. Anna Członkowska MD, PhD finished Medical Academy in Warsaw. Since 1985, she is employed in the 2nd Department of Neurology in the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw (till end of 2014 as the head of the department). She is since years also collaborating with Department of Pharmacology, Warsaw Medical University.

Her main interests are: stroke (epidemiology, treatment, rehabilitation), neuroimmunology (multiple sclerosis, local and systemic immunity in neurodegeneration) and Wilson’s disease. She has passed several fellowships in neuroimmology and neuropathology (UK, Germany, USA) and participated in many stroke clinical studies.

She was coordinating in Poland the National Program for Prevention and Treatment of Stroke and the neurological part of the National Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment Program in years 1997-2008. She is president of Cerebrovascular Section of Polish Neurological Society. She is a member of the directory board of Central and East European Stroke Society, and for 4 years was the president of this society, organizing several teaching courses and stroke congress for this region. For a few years she served as the member of Directory Board of International Stroke Society, World Stroke Organization and European Stroke Organization.

She is the member of Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, member correspondent of Polish Academy of Science, American Neurological Association, German Society of Neurology and she is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. She was promoting over 40 PhD students, and many from her group gained further degrees and independent positions in research or clinical neurology.

Laurent Derex, MD, PhD, is board certified in neurology, co-Head of the Stroke Center, Department of Neurology, Neurological Hospital, University of Lyon, France.

He was educated at the Lyon University and Cincinnati University (USA). His main research interests are related to acute stroke diagnosis and treatment. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He is co-Chair of the Scientific Committee of the French Neurovascular Society and Fellow of the European Stroke Organisation.

Neurologist with wide experience in management of health institutions and healthcare planning, since 2004 he has been Director of the Stroke Program, a Catalan Health Department Master Plan that focuses on all stages of stroke care at a region-wide level.

With the collaboration of hospital stroke professionals he had a leading role in the implementation of the Catalan Acute Stroke Network. He was pivotal to the design and implementation of the Stroke Reperfusion Therapies Registry of Catalonia (SONIIA), a population-based and government-mandated registry that includes prospective and externally monitored data from all stroke patients treated with reperfusion therapies in Catalonia. Furthermore, he had a leading role in the development of the TeleStroke Network of Catalonia, which currently includes 12 Community Hospitals, and the Telestroke Registry (TICAT).

Zuzana Gdovinová is the Professor of Neurology from Charles University in Prague and Head of the Department of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, P.J. Šafárik University and University Hospital L. Pasteur in Košice, Slovakia, co-chair of the Centre of excelence for research of atherosclerosis.

Her research focuses on cerebrovascular disorders and dementia. She has published 1 monography, 6 teaching books (editor or co-editor), 50 peer reviewed articles registered in WoS, with 520 citations in WoS and SCOPUS, H-index 13. She was investigator or coinvestigator of 11 research projects, she is reviewer for international journals. She is the scientific secretary of the Committee of the Slovak Neurological Society, the Chair of Slovak stroke society, National SITS coordinator, the member of European Academy of Neurology Quality Assurance Sub-Committee and since 2015 Fellow of European Stroke Society. She is in Editorial board of European Stroke Journal, Czech and Slovak Neurology and Neurosurgery. In 2000-2003 a 2007-2010 she was vice-dean for international relations at Faculty of Medicine, P.J. Šafárik University Košice.

Michael Mazya works as a Neurologist at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.

In 2014, he received a PhD degree at the Karolinska Institutet, conducting research on the topic of hemorrhagic complications of intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke, and studies on contraindications to stroke thrombolysis. He holds the position of Network and Research Executive at SITS International. Dr Mazya is a member of the ESO Educational Committee. In 2010, he co-founded the Swedish Acute Neurology Society, affiliated with the ESO and the Neurocritical Care Society. Dr Mazya received the Young Investigator Award at the ESO Conference 2015 and the Outstanding Young Research in Stroke Award at the ESC 2012. His main research interests are acute recanalisation treatments in ischemic stroke, prehospital stroke triage, secondary prevention in stroke, and acute management of intracerebral hemorrhage.

Dr. Sergii Moskovko, MD, Ph.D., D. med. Sci. is Professor and Chief of Neurology Department of Vinnytsia National Medical University n.a. M.I. Pirogov and Curator of Regional Emergency Department Stroke Unit.

Since 1998 he has been involved in many international clinical trials in the field of Stroke (PROFESS, SOCRATES, CARS), PD, MS as a Principal Investigator and National Coordinator.

He is member of National and International scientific Societies as the Ukraine Anti-Stroke Association, Ukraine Society of Neurology, Ukraine Society of Neurorehabilitation, European Stroke Organization, Movement Disorders Society etc., Editorial Board member of National Neurological Journals, International Journal of Stroke (Russian-speaking version).

He is author more than 130 original articles in research field of stroke (epidemiology, organization of treatment and care, rehabilitation), PD and Movement Disorders, MS, headache, cognitive neurology.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Necioglu Orken is the director of the Neurology Department, Neurological Intensive Care Unit and Stroke Unit at the University of Health Sciences in the Sisli Hamidiye Etfal Education and Research Hospital.

Her research focuses on cerebrovascular disorders, neurosonology and multiple sclerosis. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Turkish Neurological Society of Cerebrovascular Diseases, Neurological Intensive Care and Neurosonology Working Groups. She is also a member of the European Stroke Organisation Stroke Unit Committee. She has written many articles and chapters in books concerning cerebrovascular diseases.

Turgut Tatlisumak is professor of neurology (stroke medicine) at the University of Gothenburg and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden.

He has long served as the vice chairman and director of stroke center at the Department of Neurology, Helsinki University Central Hospital. He trained in neurology at the same department and completed a research fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He holds degrees in teaching and health administration. He is the founding chairman of Finnish National Telestroke Network. Turgut Tatlisumak’s research field is experimental and clinical stroke. He has edited or contributed to more than 20 books and published over 300 articles. He served as assistant editor and member of editorial board of Stroke, was the founding chief editor of Case Reports in Neurology, and member of editorial board in several other journals including Stroke. He served as a peer reviewer to over 60 journals over 400 times, several research funding bodies, and to many prestigious universities for academic promotions. Dr Tatlisumak has been involved in over 50 multicenter trials serving at various positions including chairmanship of steering committees. He supervised 12 PhD, 10 master’s, and 35 MD theses. He has received several teaching and research awards. Dr Tatlisumak has served on executive committees of the Finnish Neurological Society, the Nordic Stroke Society, and the European Stroke Organization. He is a fellow of AHA and ESO.

Vítor Tedim Cruz was born in Porto, Portugal in 1974. He received his M.D. degree at ICBAS-HGSA, University of Oporto (1992-1998), was graduated in Neurology (2001-2005), proceeded with a post-graduation in Health Systems Management at University of Oporto Business School (2009-2010) and concluded his PhD in Health Sciences & Technology at the University of Aveiro in 2014. In 2015 integrated the Epidemiological Research Unit at the Public Health Institute of the University of Oporto.

His major research interests are in neurorehabilitation, cognitive and behavioural neurology and cerebrovascular diseases. He is the principle investigator and co-investigator of public funded scientific projects and co-author of 36 international peer-reviewed articles indexed in Pubmed, 15 books and book chapters. He lectured in Neurosciences as an Invited Assistant at the Health Sciences Department, University of Aveiro (2006-2014). As a Senior Neurologist (since 2006) he runs a memory clinic at the Neurology Department, Centro Hospitalar Entre Douro e Vouga, Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal. In 2011 co-founded Neuroinova, a company dedicated to research and development of technologies in the field of cognitive rehabilitation and commercialization of COGWEB®, Brain on Track® and CACAO® systems. In 2013 co-founded Stroke of Genius, a start-up company dedicated to research and development of a system (SWORD®) to improve motor rehabilitation of stroke and other neurologic patients. He is member of the board of the Portuguese Stroke Organization (since 2011) and of the board of Neurologists of the Portuguese Medical Council (since 2012).

Dr. Cristina Tiu, is associated professor at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ”Carol Davila” Bucharest and Head of Stroke Unit in the University Hospital Bucharest, one of the largest hospitals in Romania.

She has graduated the European Master of Stroke at Krems in 2012 with excellency. She is involved since 2011 in organising the network for fibrinolysis in Romania and she is the president of the Working Group of the Ministry of Health for the interventional treatment in acute stroke. She has created the Romanian Registry for Interventional treatment in acute stroke (iv thrombolysis and thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke) after the model of SITS – MOST registry and she is responsible for the management of the registry.

She is actively involved in the ESO-EAST project as the coordinator of the romanian group. She is organising every year since 2000, a three week teaching course of cervical and cerebral ultrasound and she has written a book of Neurosonology and several book chapters.

He currently serves as a Chairmen of Executive Committee of the Cerebrovascular Board of Czech Neurological Society. Dr. Tomek works as a chief of the cerebrovascular program and deputy director of the Neurology Department, 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Dr. Tomek is also a fellow of the European Stroke Organisation.

Dr. Tomek received his MD in 1998 at Charles University, he then completed his neurology board exams in 2001 and 2004. In 2014 he completed PhD with thesis “Pharmacogenetics of warfarin”.

His research interests include cerebrovascular neurology, clinical and research applications of personalized medicine in stroke patients (specifically, the pharmacogenetics of vitamin K antagonists, acetylsalicylic acid, thienopyridines and novel oral anticoagulants) and neurocritical care in acute stroke.

Dr. Tomek has authored over 50 research papers, over 300 congress presentations, 8 book chapters and two monographs as principal editor. He has been a co-investigator in over 15 clinical trials and in 8 research grant projects.

Prof. Danilo Toni is Director of the Emergency Department Stroke Unit in University Rome Sapienza. Since 1985 he has been involved in study design, quality control, data analysis, steering committee and national coordination of many therapeutic international trials and registries (ECASS, ECASS II, ECASS III, ECASS IV, TESPI SITS-MOST, RE-SPECT ESUS, NAVIGATE ESUS, SAFFO).

He is National Coordinator for Italy and member of the Steering Committee of the SITS-ISTR.

He is member of National and International scientific Societies as the Italian Society of Neurology, the Italian Stroke Organisation and the European Stroke Organisation.

He has published in the research field of acute stroke (early diagnosis, prognostic indexes, therapy) more than 300 original articles, abstracts, congress presentations, books’ chapters and one book.

Prof. Ulrike Waje-Andreassen

Ulrike Waje-Andreassen is a neurologist at the Centre of Neurovascular Diseases, Department of Neurology, Haukeland University Hospital, and is professor of neurology at the Institute of Biological and Medical Psychology (IBMP), University of Bergen, Norway. Since 2000, she works as clinician at the Stroke Unit at Haukeland University Hospital and has contributed to international and national stroke treatment trials and to design and follow-up of own academic studies.

Prof. Waje-Andreassen is steering committee member of the NORSTROKE Bergen conference, a national yearly conference in order to increase quality in national acute stroke treatment and stroke research, member of the European Society of Neurosonology and Cerebral Hemodynamics, the Norwegian Stroke Organisation and the European Stroke Organisation. She has published basic research, ultrasound and clinical work after acute stroke. Special interests are diagnostics and patients´ challenges after acute stroke at a young age.

In 2012 Prof. Waje-Andreassen became member of the ESO Stroke Unit Committee, and has chaired the committee since the ESOC 2016.
