Marked differences in healthcare systems, economic and social factors across Europe influence cardiovascular risk profiles in patients including the incidence of cerebrovascular disease. The differences also frequently translate into disparities in patient outcome; especially for women who tend to fair worse than men after a stroke. Additionally, women are underrepresented in clinical trials contributing to less optimal prevention and treatment for stroke in women.
Academically, women are generally underrepresented in academic leadership positions and at scientific meetings and with the same qualifications, tend to receive less money for research.
