Expanding Access to Stroke Care Through European Telestroke Networks

The use of telemedicine in stroke care is safe, increases the use of evidence-based therapy, and enables coverage for patients in areas with less reliable access to healthcare.

Telemedicine has transformed stroke care—making evidence-based treatment safer, faster, and more accessible for patients in underserved regions across Europe.

The purpose of the ESO Telestroke Committee is to improve the dissemination of qualified stroke treatment across the whole care continuum and across all regions in Europe via telemedicine.

According to the committee’s action plan for 2020-2024, their first objective is to increase the number of telestroke networks and telemedicine-assisted stroke units. To manage this objective, committee members are working to identify underserved regions regarding acute stroke care in Europe.

The list of telestroke networks below is the result of a 2022 survey among European telestroke leaders.
