WISE promotes scientific initiatives and efforts which emphasise women’s stroke care. Europe has marked diversities in its health care systems, as well as its economic and social fabric. These differences have been shown to influence cardiovascular risk profile in patients along with the incidence of cerebrovascular disease. These differences frequently translate into disparities regarding patient outcome; especially for women who tend to fair worse than men after a stroke. WISE is working to bridge the gap in women’s stroke care throughout Europe.

The ESO WISE webinar “What makes a good mentor and where can I find one?” took place on Thursday 11 April 2024 from 17:30 to 19:00 CET.
Valeria Caso (Italy) and Charlotte Cordonnier (France) discussed the different forms of mentorship, what is feasible and their personal experiences. Marked differences in healthcare systems, economic and social factors across Europe influence cardiovascular risk profiles in patients including the incidence of cerebrovascular disease. The differences also frequently translate into disparities in patient outcome; especially for women who tend to fair worse than men after a stroke. Additionally, women are underrepresented in clinical trials contributing to less optimal prevention and treatment for stroke in women.
Academically, women are generally underrepresented in academic leadership positions and at scientific meetings and with the same qualifications, tend to receive less money for research.
