Experts in stroke research and mid-career researchers meet in Garmisch to discuss the latest and hottest topics in stroke research

The European Stroke Science Workshop (ESSW) convenes top experts in the field of clinical, translational, and basic stroke research with the aim to:

discuss the latest and hottest topics in stroke research
enable in-depth discussions
connect people in an environment that facilitates new ideas and collaborations
identify future leaders in the field
strengthen the ESO community
strengthen the legacy of ESO in terms of “excellence in stroke science”

The ESSW first convened in 2011 and has become a cornerstone of ESO’s academic activities and a major highlight for researchers from across the globe. Participants and faculty represent stroke researchers at all career stages with diverse backgrounds and specialties. The ESSW is comprised of plenary lectures and discussions, balanced with opportunities to build personal connections.

We made three changes in 2023. First, we introduced a competitive application process for mid-career researchers aspiring to academic independence, so that they can present their future research plans. Otherwise, attendance remains by invitation only. Second, we have added two debates. Third, there is more time in the programme for discussion.

The invitation and registration process for the 2023 ESSW has now closed.

The ESSW has been supported by the European Stroke Organisation (ESO), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the SyNergy Excellence Cluster in Munich.

Why should you apply?

The GSSW could provide an opportunity for mid-career stroke researchers to present, discuss and advance their research programmes amongst a small meeting of later-career stroke researchers.

There will be a competitive application process for a limited number of places at the 7^th GSSW for mid-career researchers to attend and present a poster about their existing and future research programme; in addition, one mid-career researcher will be selected by the GSSW organisers to make an oral presentation.

Who should apply?

Mid-career clinician or non-clinical scientist focussed on cerebrovascular disease
Completed PhD (or equivalent postgraduate higher degree) in a topic related to cerebrovascular disease
Evolving research programme
Career pathway towards academic independence
ESO membership at time of application
Working in Europe

Application Requirements

Curriculum vitæ (two pages of A4, describing details of their academic and professional experience, publications, research grants, and awards)
250-word abstract about your existing and future research programme, outlining specifically how it will contribute to stroke care or treatment (one page of A4)
Covering letter explaining how you intend to benefit from attending the 7^th GSSW (one page of A4)
