Else Charlotte Sandset graduated as a medical doctor from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2006, achieved her PhD from the University of Oslo in Norway in 2012, and completed a year as visiting fellow at the George Institute for Global Health in Sydney, Australia in 2016.

Currently, she works as consultant neurologist in the Stroke Unit – Department of Neurology at Oslo University Hospital in Norway, and holds a Post-Doctoral Fellowship grant from the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health authority. Her research interest and experience is clinical trials, she was the trial manager of the Scandinavian Candesartan Acute Stroke Trial. She is the current chair of the “Prehospital and Acute Stroke” Research Subgroup at Oslo University Hospital, and the Co-Principal Investigator of the ongoing ParaNASPP trial which will assess the use of a mobile application and NIHSS in the pre-hospital setting.

She is also involved projects on sex differences in stroke, both in access to care, risk factors and treatment. Additionally, she is on the Steering Committee of the Blood Pressure in Acute Stroke Collaboration (BASC) and the ELAN trial, and has authored publications in leading journals such as the Lancet, Stroke and International Journal of Stroke.

She has been involved in ESO as the Chair of the Young Stroke Physicians and Researchers committee from 2015-2019, as a member of the PR committee and the Scientific Programme Committee of ESOC. She initiated the ESO blog, on which young colleagues worldwide comment papers published in the European Stroke Journal, and write general posts on topics of their interest. She initiated and chaired the first Women in Stroke Leadership Workshop in 2018 and 2019 together with colleagues from the Women’s Initiative for Stroke in Europe.
